The paleo “caveman” diet is the newest diet fad to sweep America, and unless you’ve been living under a rock (which, as a caveman, you may have been), you’ve probably been bombarded by people who have tried the paleo life and swear by it. In the coming weeks, The Daily Meal is going to introduce you to the prehistoric palette with George Bryant, aka the “Civilized Caveman:” paleo blogger, retired Marine, and co-author of the upcoming cookbook The Paleo Kitchen along with Juli Bauer.

So what is paleo? The extremely popular diet that has been praised by many nutritionists basically allows you to feed your inner primitive human by avoiding all processed foods, eating high amounts of protein and fiber, and diminishing your carb intake. In The Paleo Kitchen, Bryant has collected over 100 paleo-friendly recipes, from muffins and stuffed mushrooms to squash soup and citrus salad.

The book doesn’t come out until June 10, but you can satiate your primitive hunger pangs with our recipes for George Bryant’s Perfect Burger, Bacon Lime Sweet Potato Salad, and Cinnamon Chocolate Swirl Banana Bread. 4 Recipes from The Paleo Kitchen (by PaleOMG and Civilized Caveman)

I have been full tilt in the kitchen these past couple of weeks. Not creating my own recipes, but checking out some of the amazing new cookbooks that have come out recently. I’ve been in a bit of a creative slump, so I am needing some inspiration. This past weekend I dove into the new book, The Paleo Kitchen, by Juli Bauer (from PaleOMG) and George Bryant (from Civilized Caveman.)

I’ve been a big fan of PaleOMG for some time now. She has been a big inspiration for me on my blogging journey. So when I saw that she had a new book out, I knew I had to have it. Just looking at the cover was making me drool.

I’m a bit newer to George and Civilized Caveman. But I’ve been seeing his recipes around the blogosphere and am really digging his recipes for Avocado Stuffed Burgers and Pumpkin Cinnamon Muffins. His personal story about his journey to healthy living and creating his blog is really inspiring. I love how real he is. And his photography is kick ass!

Juli joined forces with George and created a really quality and beautiful paleo and primal cookbook. I’m totally impressed. I love that the first 70 pages of the book includes:

  • Juli and George’s paleo stories,
  • tips for getting started on your paleo journey
  • shopping and cooking tips
  • a guide to kitchen tools and equipment,
  • the paleo kitchen makeover
  • and top four tips for sticking to the paleo lifestyle

Then comes the 100+ brand new mouth-watering recipes, all with drool-worthy photos to draw you in I have to admit that when it comes to cookbooks, I’m all about the photos.

The recipes are divided into 11 chapters, from breakfast to pork, chicken and beef dishes and everything in between. I almost didn’t know where to begin. So I started with the cover.

Did you see the Fluffy Blueberry Pancakes dripping with maple syrup on the cover? Best damn paleo pancakes I have ever had! We made them twice over the weekend, and my family devoured them. Light, fluffy, and just like real pancakes. My paleo pancakes often come out a bit “eggy” but I think the tapioca flour in this recipe helps with that. Definitely will be making these again.

Next came the Cinnamon Chocolate Swirl Banana Bread. I couldn’t resist. It just looked so dang tasty. Plus, I had a slight over-abundance of ripe bananas in my fridge since I just did my post on how to quickly ripen bananas. Another winner! Perfectly moist and delicious. I don’t just eat desserts, so next I made the 4 Layer Beef and Bacon Casserole. Just look at that thing. I had to try it. Imagine layers of sweet potato, cauliflower mash, beef and bacon. Yeah, it was bomb. We ate the whole thing for dinner one night. My little one even licked her plate. This is my kind of dish. Want to try it? You can check out the recipe HERE.

The next recipe that caught my eye was the Sweet Plantain Guacamole. I love all things avocado, and I have a slight plantain obsession going on right now. I added kale to my guac recently when I made my Kale Guacamole, but I had never thought of adding plantains. It really works. I made a little taco salad with spiced ground beef and salad green and added this guac on top. It was delish. This would be so good with shredded pork. Juli and George have a Slow Cooker Pulled Pork recipe that I want to try. Juli did another sneak peek on her site of the guac recipe, so you can check out the recipe HERE.

And last night, I made this. When I saw the recipe for The Perfect Burger, I wanted to eat the page. A burger covered with avocado mousse and shoestring parsnip fries? Sounds like my kind of burger. Just like the photo, it was divine. The avocado mousse is in the book as well. It was a deliciously creamy addition. The parsnip fries were fun. I would eat it again. Chocolate Cinnamon Truffles from Civilized Caveman Cooking

The 8 dates that I had left from a previous recipe were just staring at me. What was I going to make with 8 dates? That didn’t involve wrapping them in bacon – which I have to admit, I was tempted to do….

I also read the other day that cacao powder is good for you! Obviously, that doesn’t give me license to eat chocolate bars or anything, but I haven’t really had much cacao powder in a while except what I put in my chilli, Maybe, since it was December, I should make a little ‘treat’ for myself…. I mean, honestly, the recipes that have been coming up on my Facebook feed and RSS feed seem to ALL have been sweet treats. And they all look so lovely, but it’s just a waste to make a giant batch of muffins or cookies or anything because I honestly don’t have a sweet tooth, and I’d hate to waste them.

Anyway, a recipe for Chocolate Cinnamon Truffles showed up on my feed from Civilized Caveman Cooking, I figured, what the hell. And it was quick! So I made them.

But, here goes, I did a few of my own ‘substitutions’….

I only had 8 dates and the recipe called for 10, so I cheated by throwing in a couple chunks of candied ginger. Yea, it’s not strictly paleo, I know. But I like ginger. And it seemed to me a good alternative for those 2 missing dates. Also, I used cashews instead of pecans. Pecans are pretty hard to find here. In fact, I went to the fruit and veg shop on Monday (she also sells nuts…) and said, in Catalan, “I’m looking for a nut, but I can’t remember the name for them in Catalan…” and she replied “Pecans.” “Yes! How’d you know?” She replied, “I have everything here. Except pecans. So that is the only one that folks need to ask for.” Clever woman. Anyway, she’s going to try and get hold of them for me.

I digress. So, ginger in place of 2 dates. Cashews instead of almonds. Organic Vanilla extract in place of vanilla beans.


I don’t know about you, but when I hear bacon, you’ve already peaked my interest. That’s why Civilized Caveman’s Butternut Squash Soup has my full attention! This recipe is perfect for the season!

This book was pretty much what I expected, a good set of simple recipes. I am familiar with both authors already since I am a student of both. I was a bit surprised by how simple the recipes were, though. A lot of cook books (even Paleo ones) can have a long ingredient list. For me, long ingredient lists meas more money (and goodbye recipe!) The authors in this book offer simple, but interesting recipes that use ingredients that are usually already in my home anyway. As a plus, the book also includes recipes for marinades and sauces, which is a particular soft spot for me while in transition to Paleo. Thus, you get a better sense of the variety that of foods that are available in the Paleo crockpot repertoire . The instructions are simple and direct, making it highly user-friendly.

In short, the book does fulfill its goal of providing quick and easy crockpot Paleo recipes. If you are looking for Paleo recipes, this book will provide a couple along with culinary inspiration for future recipes. If you don't care for Paleo, but are interested in some new recipes, this book also may be of use. The book is Paleo, but has recipes that are available for anyone.
